Planning:
- Town/City: Lower Sackville
- Region: Halifax Metro
- Distance from Halifax: 23 km (14 mi)
- Parking: There is a large clear area that is used as carpool parking just off exit 2A from Highway 101
- Trailhead Coordinates: 44°46’45.44°N,63°43’33.97°W
- Waterfall Coordinates: 44°46’43.47°N, 63°43’32.61°W
- Estimated Time: 30 minutes, or 1.5 hours if take the long loop and enjoy your hike.
What to Expect:
- Webber Lake Falls is a 6 meter tiered waterfall located in a forest just off of highway 101, an oasis in the city. It has an elevation gain of less than 20 meters.
- Directions: Start down the service road a little ways and you will see a garbage can on the right in front of the entrance to the woods.Take the trail to the slight left heading towards the brook, you will be able to hear running water which is the falls head to the sound not very far in. It is less than 2km there and back but you can take a loop that will be around 4kms. The longer loop leads to Webber Lake and when the water is high expect having to cross the brook and potentially finding an alternate way across.
- Difficulty: The trail is easy to follow and suitable for all ages and fitness levels, making it a great option for a family outing or a leisurely hike.
Outdoor Activities:
- Hiking: Easy less than 2 km out-and-back trail suitable for most ages and abilities. May not be suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. Longer loop is approximatley 4km.
- Swimming: Take a dip in the pool at the base of the falls or at the lake further down.
Additional Information:
- Accessibility: The trail is mostly flat but can be uneven in some areas because of tree roots. The longer trail does have a few hills but nothing too steep. Not wheelchair or stroller friendly.
- Dogs: Yes, on leash.
- Seasonality: Best in spring & fall, but with proper planning could be all year round.
- Budget Range: Free to visit.
- Website & Contact: All Trails Page
Local Recommendations:
- Acadian Fish and Chips & Enzo Pizzeria – Hammonds Plains: Their seafood is phenomenal, service great and prices very reasonable. If you don’t like seafood they have other pizza/pub like fare. (restaurant website)
- Chicken Burger – Bedford: 1950’s style budget friendly fast food restaurant. It’s special is the chicken burger which is hot shredded chicken on a bun. (restaurant website)
- Courthouse Hill – East Hants: This is a lookoff that overlooks 5 of Nova Scotia’s counties. Esepcially beautiful in the autumn. (directions)
- Uniacke Estate Museum Park – Mount Uniacke: Step back in time at Uniacke Estate, a grand Georgian mansion (1813-1815) offering glimpses of 1800s Nova Scotia gentry life. Hike the scenic trails for a history and nature escape. (museum website)
Tips:
- Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, especially if exploring the rocks.
- Bring a swimsuit and towel if you plan on swimming.
- Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy either at the falls or near the lake.
- Leave no trace! Take all your garbage with you to help preserve the natural beauty of the area.
- I suggest having the ALL TRAILS app if you plan on taking the 4km loop as even though the trail is marked with tape and paint on the trees it can be tricky at times.
My Experience:
April 7, 2024: Walking through this forest with a magical feel felt wonderous and like a fairy tale. Once getting to the waterfall and the river/brook running was enchanting and cleansing to the spirit. This adventure pushed my self-confidence in my capabilities because after we walked down to the lake we could not cross because the water was too high (a lot of spring melt and rainfall recently). At this we had to make our way back up to find an alternate way across. We knew this was possible because a lady we had passed with her three dogs earlier we than seen on the other side. Back closer to the waterfall we did some rock hopping and I couldn’t believe I was able to do this, I was so proud of myself for not cutting this adventure short and trying something new.
